- Congratulations to Graduate Alumni Sabina Ohri for being hired for a research position at the Center for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente (September 2009).
- The Department of Economics is pleased to announce Ms. HAO (AUDREY) FANG has been awarded the Art DeVany Prize ($100) for best-paper presented in the Graduate Student Colloquium last quarter (fall 2006). You can view her paper, “How Urban Sprawl Matters: A Joint Modelling of Households' Vehicle Choice and Vehicle Usage,” by clicking here.
- Congratulations to Professor KENNETH A. SMALL in the Department of Economics of UCI who has been named a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International. The Association, an international and interdisciplinary academic organization with over 3000 members on five continents, is devoted to research and teaching in regional science—which includes urban economics, geography, urban planning, transportation engineering, and some related fields. Currently there are 27 Fellows. UCI is unusual in now having two fellows: UCI Professor Jan Brueckner was inducted in 2005. UCI is one of just two universities with multiple Fellows.
- A recent article in the Washington Times quotes UCI Economics Professor JAN K. BRUECKNER, when commenting on his research that calls into question the notion that urban sprawl is isolating: “Suburban living is better for one’s social life.” See Washington Times (13 November 2006)
- A comprehensive review of previous empirical studies on the minimum wage by UCI Economics Professor DAVID NEUMARK and William Wascher of the Federal Reserve Board was highlighted in a Wall Street Journal article on “Weighing Minimum Wage Hikes” (03 November 2006). Professor Neumark was quoted in another article when commenting on the effects of raising the minimum wage: “I wouldn’t say I’m convinced you increase poverty [by raising the minimum wage]. But I’m convinced there’s no evidence you reduce poverty.” See Forbes.com (01 November 2006).
- A recent article in the Washington Post, "Honoring the Scholars Who Answer Questions Most People Don't Ask," quoted UCI Economics Professor MARIGEE BACOLOD when commenting on her research about the loss of good teachers: "School teachers are less qualified today than they once were. And you can blame growing opportunities for women in other, higher-paying professions." The article appears in the Washington Post (06 October 2006).
- Congratulations to FRANCESCA MAZZOLARI, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at UCI. Her dissertation was selected as the first runner-up for the National Tax Association's 2006 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. The award (including a check for $1000) will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the National Tax Association in Boston, Nov 16-18. Francesca will present her paper at a special session with other awardees.
- Congratulations to GARY RICHARDSON, Associate Professor of Economics at UCI, for having been elected to the National Bureau of Economic Research (the nation's nation's leading nonprofit economic research organization) as a research fellow in the programs of Monetary Economics and the Development of the American Economy.
- DAN BOGART, Assistant Professor of Economics at UCI, has won the award for best article published in Explorations in Economic History, called the "Explorations Prize," in 2005. You can download his article, entitled Turnpike Trusts and the Transportation Revolution in Eighteenth-Century England, by clicking here (pdf).
- UCI Economics Professor JAN K. BRUECKNER is quoted in a recent NY Times article, when commenting on how the terrorist plot foiled by the British police could affect the airline industry: The challenge is to deal with this latest concern without tangling up the industry and still convincing people they’re safe. See the NY Times (11 August 2006).
- An LA Times article, Happy? Let’s Sum It Up, quotes UCI Economics Professor MICHAEL MCBRIDE when commenting on his research about happiness: People ask me all the time, What do you learn about happiness? What’s the secret to happiness?’ Low expectations. See the LA Times (3 July 2006). The article also appears in the Houston Chronicle (10 July 2006).
- The research of UCI Economics Professor Emeritus ART DEVANY, on the film industry, is highlighted in Meet Hollywood's Latest Genius, West Magazine, LA Times (2 July 2006).
- The Orange County Register's Marketplace section (27 June 2006) has run a front-page package featuring the research of Professor Emeritus KENNETH A. SMALL and Professor DAVID BROWNSTONE, both in UCI's Economics Department, on toll roads.
- A recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal (23 June 2006, WEEKEND JOURNAL Tast - REVIEW & OUTLOOK: Labor Lost) discusses some of the important research of UCI Economics Professor DAVID NEUMARK on the minimum wage. His research, with Junfu Zhang and Stephen Ciccarella, both of the Public Policy Institute of California, on Wal-Mart's impact on retail payrolls, has been featured in the Economic Focus section of The Economist (23 February 2006).
- Professor JAN K. BRUECKNER in the Department of Economics of UCI has been named a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International. The Association, an international community of scholars interested in the regional impacts of national or global processes of economic and social change, only recently started naming fellows, and the current count is 17. This justly deserved award is yet more recognition of Jan's many important contributions to Urban Economics.
- An article in The New Yorker (26 September 2005) comments on a recent article by UCI Economics Professor KENNETH A. SMALL and his co-author, Ian Parry, regarding the appropriate tax on gasoline, Does Britain or The United States Have the Right Gasoline Tax? American Economic Review, 95 (September 2005), pp. 1276-1289.
