The Nanzhuang Project -- summer 2004

Photographs from the project

The Nanzhuang Project was undertaken during the summer of 2004.  In the absence of financial support from other sources, I decided to finance the project myself, rather than allow cronyism of the grant giving process to stultify my research efforts.

The project was the outgrowth of my work with Christine Avenarius, a China specialist and a seasoned practitioner of network analysis. The purpose of the project was to gain additional ammunition for grant writing; and it was clear that we could gain the necessary information during that summer.

The goal of the study was to examine networks of relation within a pear-growing village in the south of Hebei province, China. The village of Nanzhuang was chosen because we had been introduced to it by Professor Zhao Xudong, now of the China Agricultural University, Beijing, but who was associated with Peking University at that time. Dr. Zhao featured this village in his doctoral thesis.

The project manager was Professor Liang Yongjia and he was able to select six of his students to come to the village and perform the interviews.
